Art for Change

I had the pleasure of working with two students from the FACES for the Future Sacramento Program.  I spent five weeks with them and we were able to discuss how to prevent HIV, STIs and we even planned a community project in order to reach out to their peers.  We plan to have a condom art show at Hiram Johnson High School during their spring health fair.  Below they talk about their experience, their career goals and some of the art that was created.  We will be working with more students at the next rotation and we cannot wait to share what they decide to do for their community project…stay tuned!

My experience with SacPOP was really fun. I didn’t really have an interest in HIV, STDs or Sex. In fact, I thought I knew what HIV was, but interning with SacPOP taught me that I was so wrong. I became aware that I knew nothing about sex and sexual diseases/infections, which I found funny because I always thought of myself as a well-informed student.  My favorite part of SacPOP is that I learned how to put on a condom correctly.

I want to keep my career options open, but I plan to become a Registered Nurse. I don’t know exactly what field I want to specialize in, but I think I want to take care of the elderly or newborns or patients dealing with cardiovascular problems.

Thanks,

Jasmine D.

Hi Ms. Ericka,

I would like to say thank you for helping me understand how HIV and AIDS are spread and helping me understand it better. I have had a great five weeks with you. I would also like to thank you for taking your time on both Jasmine and I. My experience overall was amazing, you made learning about condoms, HIV, and AIDS amazingly fun even though it was kind of weird I had fun throughout it.

What I liked most was the art project and that we are going to be able to show our art to our school at the Health Fair and help the people understand HIV and AIDS better. What I also liked was being able to get to know you and be able to have fun with you. I had the most amazing time with you even though it was short hopefully one day our time with you will be longer.

My plans on pursuing a health career would have to be to go to Sac State or Consumnes River College and get as much nursing experience as I can and be able to become either a Neonatal Nurse or an OBGYN.

Thank you!

Vanessa M.
