U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

Federal protections to access safe abortions have been removed

Today, June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court has decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, removing federal protections to access safe abortions. Without these protections, 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortions within their state and this includes 13 states who have “trigger” laws that will immediately enact bans within days or hours from today’s ruling.

For nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade has allowed people to access safe abortions, supporting the right for people to make decisions that is best for themselves and their future. Overturning Roe v. Wade does not stop abortions from happening nor does it reduce unintended pregnancies, rather it will cause harm, especially for those who are already marginalized and oppressed.

Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other people of color as well as LGBTQ+ communities, young people, people with low incomes, immigrants, and people with disabilities will all be impacted at disproportionate rates. Abortion restrictions and abortion bans are inherently racist, sexist, and classist – which all stem from white supremacy.

We are angry and we are hurting for those in states where protections will now be limited or eliminated. However, we will continue to fight. We are committed to securing the rights and protections of all people because ABORTION RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS.
