POP This! – Lube 101 3

The Youth Peer Educators were asked: Tell me how lube can help you or give some pros and cons about lube.

Let us know what you think.

Using Lube

Have you ever used lube when having sex?  No?  You should give it a try!

Lube is a great way to help reduce the transmission of STDs including HIV AND it can make sex more fun.  Who does not want safe and enjoyable sex? *crickets* That’s what I thought!

The above picture lists some pros and while we only listed messiness as a con, you still want to do your research on the type of lube you would prefer.  For us, there is no con with lube because if there is some dryness (vaginally or anally) sex can be uncomfortable and can create more micro-tears on your vaginal or anal walls which will put you more at risk for contracting a STD or HIV.

However, we are fully aware that one size does not fit all so there are options out there for you.

First up, there is water-based lube:

  • Safe with condoms.
  • Less likely to irritate if you have sensitive skin but there are options for sensitive skin.
  • Since water absorbs in your skin, you might need to reapply or reactive it using water or saliva.
  • Does not stain.
  • Available in sugar-free flavors.

 Next up is silicone lube:

  • Safe with condoms.
  • Longer lasting than water-based lube.
  • Does not dissolve in water so you can use it in the shower, hot tub and pool.
  • Does not come off the sheets or your body easily.
  • Can stain delicate fabrics.
  • Can irritate the skin but there are options for sensitive skin.
  • Cannot use with silicone sex toys because it can destroy them.

 Lastly, there is oil-based lube:

  • They ARE NOT safe with condoms.  Oil can destroy a condom leaving you with no protection against STDs, HIV or pregnancy.
  • Do not use: Vaseline, cooking oil, grease or any other similar product – they will also destroy your condom.

Do your research and see what works best for you.  If you are noticing an irritation, try another kind.  There are even water/silicone hybrid lubes that you can try if you want the best of both worlds.

If you have an allergy or notice a strange reaction to lubrication, talk to your doctor.

Lube is recommended to use with condoms to give you more protection.  Give them a try and let us know what you think.
